Extinction Rebellion will demonstrate at Eindhoven Airport, to reduce flights

On Saturday afternoon, the climate action organizations Scientist Rebellion (SR) and Extinction Rebellion (XR) will demonstrate at Eindhoven Airport. Climate activists demand that Eindhoven Airport immediately halt private aircraft operations and cut the number of flights in half. The planned action includes a loudspeaker-equipped rally in front of the main building accompanied by music and dancing, as well as “a surprise party” where the extinction rebellion and scientists rebellion hope to highlight their demands “in a fun but clear way”.

Climate protestors will not satisfied even if the airport cancels 1,000 flights annually because 41,500 planes scheduled to take off annually. Therefore, according to a statement from the climate action organization, the extinction rebellion is asking for the number of flights to be cut in half and wants tariffs on kerosene to be imposed by the government and the EU.

Airlines have received warnings from the airport that they might not allowed to refuel during the climate action. Several airlines have decided to move, cancel, or advance certain flights as a result. The Eindhoven Airport suggests that passengers verify flight times and well-prepared on Saturday. As previously stated, neither XR nor SR plans to cancel or postpone flights.

According to the statement from the Eindhoven municipality, the Royal Military Police, the police, and the airport itself have all consulted before permitting the rally. “One crucial fundamental right is the ability to protest. We are working together to make sure that passengers, protestors, and aircraft are all safe at and near Eindhoven Airport.” However, the city council remained silent regarding certain security protocols and operations.
