PM Shehbaz Sharif planted a seedling to commemorate the start of the nationwide spring planting campaign.
To demonstrate the government’s commitment, he declared that 2024 will see twice as many saplings planted as the 240 million planted the year before.
Speaking at the event, he emphasised how urgent it is to reduce climate threats by increasing Pakistan’s forest cover, which is now only 5% of the country’s total area.
He emphasised the need for quick action, using the Global Climate Risk Index to highlight Pakistan’s standing as the fifth most vulnerable nation to climate-related disasters.

In addition to billions of dollars in financial loss, the nation lost 10,000 priceless lives between 1999 and 2018. For this reason, PM Sharif said, it is imperative that people at all levels, including educational institutions, become aware of the risks posed by climate change.
In an endeavour to transform Pakistan into a clean, green nation, the prime minister gave the relevant authorities instructions to use all reasonable efforts to promote this plantation push throughout the nation.
To protect Pakistan from the effects of climate change and to create a healthy environment, he further urged all Pakistani nationals to completely support the government by taking part in the plantation push.
